One thing to consider is certain flower bushes that local florists love to pay for the flowers to use. These bushes will always grow new flowers every year no matter what and if you just cut the best 25 percent of these flowers and sell it to your local florist at a discount (cheaper than paying freight to suppliers), your purchase can pay back for itself in 3 years and you could increase your income after that. Not much but even $100 a bushel would go a long ways.

Great post. It's the only plant I've ever managed to keep alive. I would like to learn to garden someday. It's on my ultimate to-do list.

I have a brown thumb like you. I currently am nursing an orchid that I got for free. If/when I plant something I want to grow; I will definitely look at perennials, why pay for new plants every year if you can get around it. Of course, in Houston I don't think that anything ever actually dies so it can bloom forever.

My gardens right now are completely self sustaining! I like the idea of changing the plants in a few areas around our house - that's where the annuals come in. For the most part I have perennials. I am in ND - so I am just starting to get out in the yard playing in the dirt!

I plant both perennials and annuals.
