This Week’s Discounted or Couponed Products

by Kevin on July 24, 2008

This post may only benefit those that live in my area. Every week we get something in the mail from our local newspaper called “Extra!”. It’s free and comes even though we don’t have a subscription the paper. We don’t read it, but the paper makes for a good starter for grilling out (charcoal not gas).

In each section, it comes packed full of local stores coupons and discounts for this week. When using these types of discounts, we still only buy what we would normally buy. Essentially we are stocking up when prices are low. Pay now, use later.

This is what I’ve found so far this week that looks appealing:

  • Publix always has a nice selection of Buy 1 Get 1 Free. This week we’re interested in JIF Peanut Butter, Tennessee Pride Roll Sausage (save $2.99), and Nabisco Graham Crackers ($3.99). We don’t eat a ton of sausage, but it is starting to grow on me. And with a name like Tennessee Pride… well… I’m sold. The graham crackers can be used in multiple ways, but the most common is a cream cheese and mini-chocolate chip dessert dip my wife makes. Heaven on a chocolate graham cracker.
  • I’ve written about using the Walgreen’s EasySaver program to get items for free after rebate: Chex Mix, a toothbrush, and some toothpaste. There hasn’t been much lately that we’ve been interested in… a lot of vitamins and dietary supplements. This week they do have $1 off Dove shampoo/conditioner, and $4 off of 2 Pantene shampoo/conditioner. My wife currently uses Dove as it is cheaper, and I don’t think the Pantene deal is quite good enough for us to pay the extra premium.
  • Rite Aid has an even better deal on the Dove shampoo/conditioner — buy 1 get 1 free. We’ll definitely be stopping by there sometime this week to grab some. That’s essentially a 50% discount. Sure, I’d love to get more of a discount, but 50% isn’t half bad.
  • Coupons.com lists coupons — I know you’re shocked — for various products. They’ve got a coupon for $1 off of Pert. I’m a basic guy, so I use Pert’s combined formula thing so I don’t have to buy separate conditioner. I think I’ll print this coupon off and then wait to see if any of the above stores run sales on Pert. It’s always nice to combine a coupon with a sale.

So what’s the point? All of the above items would be things we use regularly. Things that we would pay full price for simply because we use them. A little bit of awareness, and a few minutes digging through the ad filled paper, can net some nice discounts on those items. Frugality is a mentality of awareness. Always be asking yourself, “Can I get it for less?” before making a purchase.
