Earn $45 by Opening an ING Checking Account and Using It

by Kevin on October 28, 2008

I’ve touted the benefits of our ING accounts several times in the past. We have both an online checking and an online savings account with ING (plus several CDs). The rates are great, the security features are just right, and the customer service (the few times we’ve had to use it) is outstanding.

Normally you can get $25 by signing up for an ING account if you open the account with at least $250 if you use a referral link. I have plenty of referral links available, so if you need one just leave a comment or send me an e-mail. (Full disclosure: if you open up an account with my referral link and open it with at least $250, you get $25 and I get $10.)

ING is sweetening the deal coming in November. I got an e-mail from them yesterday that pointed to a new promotion called spend wisely. Essentially if you have an electric orange checking account and use your debit card 5 times for amounts over $10 during the month of November, they will give you $20 by December 15th.

There is no catch, no asterisk, no fine print at the bottom of the page. If you have an account and use it 5 times for amounts over $10, you get $20.

How is this not an awesome deal? I always use my American Express card for purchases, but definitely plan to utilize this bonus during the month of November.

For those non-account holders you are looking at an 18% return on your money. $25 account opening bonus + $20 for using the debit card = $45. With a starting “investment” of $250, that’s 18%. If you already had an account and have to spend $50 (5 x 10), you’re looking at a free 20% return as long as you are buying stuff you would normally have bought anyways.

Just another reason to love ING!

Edit: Shaun pointed out in the comments that the e-mail said the bonus would be $10. The website said $20. I’ve e-mailed ING to see if I can get some clarification on this and will update the post accordingly.

That’s interesting that you’re e-mail said you would get $20 for using the debit card, the one I received said I would only get $10.

@Shaun: The email I received also said $10, but the website said $20. It said $20 in two different places which leads me to believe that is the correct amount and the $10 was a typo. I’ll change the post to reflect this possible issue.

Thanks for the info Kevin! But hey, $10 for free is still $10! I can’t complain.

I’m assuming this is only for new customers (with no ING accounts at all), at least the $25 opening bonus? The link to the promotion wasn’t really specific and I didn’t have time to dig into it.
