Quick Technology Update

by Kevin on December 16, 2008

A few news and notes regarding technology, me, and this blog:

  • I upgraded No Debt Plan to WordPress 2.7. This has changed a lot of things on the admin/backend side of things, but not much from what you as readers see. I’m still getting used to it — very different.
  • I did have to abandon Gravatars for now. The new WordPress was putting the Gravatars in the sidebar where it shows the most recent commentors — and it was messing up the formatting. I haven’t figured out how to fix it, so I had to drop it for now. (For those not in the know, Gravatars are little images that pop up next to your name when you comment.)
  • I recently asked for advice on upgrading my desktop PC. For those that were curious what I ended up doing, here’s an update. And thanks for all of the advice!:
    • Bought Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit OEM edition)
    • Bought 2 x 2GB of RAM (to bring my total RAM up to 6GB)
    • Bought Left 4 Dead
    • The upgrade went really smooth. Shockingly smooth. The most annoying part was making sure I pulled all of my important data off (photos, music, etc.) before I wiped the hard drive clean. I haven’t gone back to put that data back on yet.
    • Windows Vista really isn’t all that bad. At least not the version we got (my wife has it on her new laptop as well). They moved some stuff around in the Control Panel, but you can elect to go to the classic version. No major problems thus far.
  • I’m anticipating getting a Blackberry Bold in February. Let the addiction begin.

Anyone else out there dealing with a lot of changing technology right now?

Not hardly, I used to be big into upgrading all my computers and everything I could touch. Lately I just have not cared since I got a real job, for the most part my computer has become an “Internet Appliance” and nothing more. Hardly even gaming anymore beyond little flash games.

I did just “upgrade” cable TV to digital and expanded basic package, but that was because they would give that to me cheaper than just internet alone at my house… explain that offer? Of course I used to have DVR and everything else so I guess it is re-upgrading.

Can’t say I’m into the games these days (until Civ 5 comes out), but I do love the upgrade I made to Vista 64. Rockin a 4GB RAM system is way better than the old 256 MB RAM on my 3 year old laptop.
