I forget the economic term for it (there really is one), but there is power in a community of apparent competitors coming together for their collective good.  The example a prof used years ago was antique shops.  You rarely see a single antique shop but a collection of them - outlet shops are the same way (thus outlet malls).  Individually they have no pull, but collectively they are a magnet.
