A Contest for My Readers, But First…

by Kevin on March 10, 2009

…I need to know what you want to win!

I’m coming up with some sort of contest to:

  • a.) promote No Debt Plan to get additional visitors and subscribers
  • b.) thank my readers for their continued readership

I’m still cooking up how the contest will run, but I need ideas on what you guys want to win.

Some ideas for contest prizes:

Books:

Gift Cards:

  • An Amazon gift card
  • Others?

Subscriptions:

  • Paying for the first few months of Ramit Sethi’s “Scrooge Strategy” tips
  • Money Magazine

Giving Away:

  • I have a very, very old laptop (we’re talking Pentium 2 or Pentium 3) that would be good for Word documents or something very low tech. Doesn’t run off of the battery (dies), so would need to be plugged in. Not sure if anyone would ever need it, but I could give it away. We also have a second laptop that is about 5 years old that is in slightly better condition. Again, I may just end up chunking this at the recycling center, but figured someone might want them.
  • Some sort of Gadget like the Flip Video MinoHD or Flip Video Ultra
  • Something else?

As you can see I don’t have a real direction here. I want to give away stuff that people actually want. So! Let me know. Drop a comment here and I’ll take everything into consideration.

I would go for the gift card from the list of things you provided. I’m much less interested in a specific book or magazine. There are a few books and magazines I would love to have, but everyone’s tastes differ. So if you’re looking for something of wide interest, keep it general/flexible is what I’d advise.

I like the used laptop idea. When recycle and reuse is as important as ever, this fits perfectly. I know I could use a simple “type writer” to keep at my desk at home. Just power full enough to check email and write a document or two. Keeps me from pulling my regular laptop out of my school bag every time I want to check my email or RSS reader. If its suitable it can be a fixed torrent down loader. I see lots of uses for it.

That old laptop wouldn’t happen to be the one I gave you when I left Birmingham would it?

If so: a) you really are as thrifty as you appear on your blog, and b) I’m excited at the opportunity to win it back!!

Hmmm, I’m more inclined to go with the gift card. Like Kate said, it offers a more universal appeal. Now another “free” thing you could offer is a 3 or 6 month free access to credit monitoring…there’s several services out there and it would keep in theme with your blog.

Books don’t have a great appeal to me – I like to read reviews of them, and if I really want the book I have no problem buying it (although I am so trying to reduce clutter, so I’d rather hit the library if I can).

Specific magazines – I already have free subscriptions to literally about 10 magazines. Ramit’s tips – I don’t know, maybe.

I love gadgets, but that can get pricey for you – maybe more benefit for you to do a few more smaller giveaways.

I don’t think you can go wrong with Amazon certificates – so universal. For variety, you could offer like a “winners choice” $25 gift card to any store or restaurant that you can easily obtain a gift card from (the winner could give you preferences and you could swing by the grocery store gift card section or whatever and pick something up).

What about SmartyPig gift certificates?

Doesn’t sound like a lot of definitive results. I guess I’ll just pick some things out 😉
