Subscriber Swap Saturday: Bargain Briana

by Kevin on March 21, 2009

This is the sixteenth edition of Subscriber Swap Saturday.

For the uninitiated, every Saturday I do an interview with another blogger. That blogger also interviews me and posts that interview on their website. We then tell our readers — hey, I think this writer is interesting, you should subscribe to that blog for a week.

This week I’m interviewing Bargain Briana. I highly encourage all of my readers to subscribe to her blog and see if you like what you find! Read more about Subscriber Swap Saturday at the link above. Her interview of me is up at her blog as well.

Briana Carter, a married mother of 4 active kids aged 10, 8, 4, and 2 started her blog “Bargain Briana” in 2008 in response to a family and friend’s interest in her bargain shopping. If you are new to couponing, you can check out Briana’s new series, “15 days of couponing” which will guide you through the art of couponing to maximize your savings so you can save money and help others or get the bargains directly in your via email or RSS.

Question (No Debt Plan): You started your blog to share your bargain hunting skills with others. How successful do you think you have been?

Answer (Bargain Briana): Success is when I get emails from people thanking me for helping them in their hard times. Every ONE person I help is a success to me.  It is also nice to see those subscriber numbers go up daily to confirm that success! 🙂

Q: What is the number one reason you think people aren’t utilizing coupons as much as they should?

A: It can be overwhelming and time consuming in the beginning. People don’t think they get the value for their time or understand that the .35 coupon can be valuable.  Let me tell ya, my time is valuable and couponing is worth my time. My last shopping trip, I saved over $300 on needed items. I spent around 6 hours planning, clipping, sorting, shopping, and unloading. So I saved $50 for every hour I put in. Worth my time! Is $50 an hour worth your time? I think the average person is going to scream YES!

Q: How do you find time to blog with a full-time job and four kids?!

A: Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper otherwise known as DCVDP to wake me up after a long night blogging!  My blogging hours are usually from 10pm until ???. Sometimes it is pretty darn late, which is sometimes evident when I really mess up the math on a deal. Luckily, I can function normally on 5-6 hours of sleep.

I try to manage my time to work on blogging when I’m most productive. I’m not going to be productive blogging at 6pm when my kids are running around the house screaming! So I wait until the kiddos are tucking quietly into bed and then it is my time to shine with my blogging!

Some of my favorite blogging tools to save time are auto scheduling posts, post templates, and auto tweets for blog updates!

Q: Many people fall on one of two sides of the fence: saving money in small bits (but lots of volume — couponing, saving money on groceries, etc.) or saving money in big chunks (negotiating car insurance or credit card interest rates). Where do you fall and why?

A: This is where my husband and I are a great fit. I fall into the small bits category. I love saving money at the grocery or the mall. My husband is the great negotiator when it comes to getting the best deal on insurance, vehicles, and home projects. I do better when someone isn’t trying to sell to me because I tend to feel bad for saying no. Our last vehicle purchase was amusing because they were trying to sell me all this extra stuff which I knew was wrong but it is hard to say no. He has this silent technique which gets them to move on.

Q: What is the best resource you have found to track upcoming store deals that you can match coupons to?

A: Many of the coupon message boards such as have the weekly ads before they are officially released. I would love to say I’m ahead of the game and have my match ups ready ahead of time but I usually wait until I have the ad actually in my hand to match up the deals.

There are also a few stores like Meijer and Marsh who send me the ad preview ahead of time. I also love and‘s coupon database. Great resource for finding the coupons to match up to the sales.

Q: What does your family think of your blog?

A: At first, my husband didn’t like all the time I spent on it.  Now, that he sees the benefits for us and our community he is on board. He is now one of my biggest promoters. Recently, he saw a woman at a fast food restaurant with her coupons laid out on the table. He approached her to let her know that his wife had a website where she does all that for ya! Reminds me, I really need to give him some of my business cards to keep handy!

In fact, my whole family are great promoters of my blog. From my 10 year old daughter who encouraged a laid off family member to check it out so they could save money like mommy to my mother in law who passed out business cards at her workplace. Even if they don’t use it like my dad, he still tells everyone about it! (To the point it almost embarrassing!)

Q: What’s the next big thing for your blog?

A: I’m in the processing of making some vlogs for my blog. Some people are more visual learners and I think this will add value to my site as well as help those readers who learn better from actually seeing it! The 15 days of couponing may turn into the 15 days of couponing vlog for April…ah, the life of never being able to be bored with so many ideas and projects in the works!

Q: No one is perfect. Where do you slip up financially?

A: Ah, caught me! Electronics. I’m kind of a tech freak and love buying the latest products. I do try to get the best deal possible but still sometimes I can’t resist even when I don’t necessarily “need” it. Oh and I do have a .95/day fountain drink habit!

Thanks for the interview, Briana! I’m staying subscribed so I can catch all of those coupon deals you post.
